Keep Your Employees Safe With Safe Driver Training

Your employees are the lifeblood of your company. They make your business happen. Your employees who drive your commercial vehicles have a very large part in that business. You are entrusting them with a lot-- supplies, money and your company’s image. Do you know how safely they are driving? For their protection, and yours, you need to know. Implement a safe driving training for your employees today with these steps.

Where can my employees get training?

The National Safety Council offers several options for safe, defensive driving training. You and your employees can take classes online or in person. A defensive driving instructor can come to your business to teach, or you can sign up for a class at a defensive driving training center. You can even be certified to teach them yourself! Learn more about all of these great options on the NSC website.

What can I personally do to promote safe driving?

The education of your employees cannot stop after one safe driving course. You need to be proactive and promote what they have learned while back at work. You can do so with these four steps.

  1. Set an example
If you come flying into the parking lot on two wheels each day when you get to work, why wouldn’t your employees think that they could drive that way, too? Show them that safe driving is important to you by always practicing it yourself.

  2. Create a policy
It’s not enough to say, “Okay, drive safe,” to your workers. That can mean very different things to different people. Come up with some set rules on how you expect your employees to drive. This can include things like not drinking before driving and always wearing your seat belt. Post the policy inside or near your commercial vehicles, and make sure your employees are aware of the rules. Have your drivers sign a copy of the policy.

  3. Positive Reinforcement
Lay out some incentives for following your safe driving policy. Drivers can be rewarded with special privileges like an extra off day, a special badge or even a cash bonus.

  4. Negative consequences
To make this policy stick, there have to be punishments as well as rewards. Give out written violations to employees who break the rules and make it clear that enough violations could cause them to lose their driving privileges.

In all, safe driving at your business begins with you, the owner. Get a course set up for defensive driving, then lay down some ground rules in the workplace. Keeping your employees safe should be one of your biggest concerns. You could save yourself the time and financial burden of a claim, and you could also save an employee’s life.
