That’s why we’ve put together some helpful tips to guide you through each step. If you're wondering how to get your Florida driver’s license, keep reading!
Why does it matter?
Holding a valid driver’s license is a legal requirement in most states, and Florida is no different. To drive legally in Florida, you must have a license and valid auto insurance. IIA has knowledgeable agents ready to assist you in finding the best auto insurance options that meet your driving needs.
Florida driver’s license requirements
Like other states, Florida has several criteria that need to be fulfilled to get a driver’s license. Here are the essentials:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Complete a drug and alcohol course
- Pass a vision and hearing test
- Pass the learner’s permit test
- Provide two proofs of residential address
- Present your Social Security card
- Pay a fee for your driver’s license or learner’s permit
- If you’re under 18, you’ll also need to submit the Certification of Minor Driver Experience form and parental consent forms
Transferring an out-of-state license
New Florida residents must obtain a Florida driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. Additionally, you’ll need to get insurance from a licensed Florida insurance agent to title and register your vehicles, which should be done within 10 days of establishing residency.
Applications for a Florida driver’s license must be made in person at a local Florida Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office or any location that offers driver licensing services. While applying, you’ll need to take a vision test, but you may be exempt from taking the written or driving test. For more details about keeping your out-of-state license, contact the Florida DMV.
The written test
One of the initial steps for new drivers is passing the Class E Knowledge Exam, which is the same as the learner’s permit test. If you already have your learner’s permit, you won’t need to retake this test.
The exam covers Florida traffic laws, traffic controls, and safe driving practices. To pass, you need to score at least 80%—which is 40 out of 50 questions. Everything you need to know can be found in the Official Florida Driver License Handbook.
The vision test
In Florida, you must pass both vision and hearing tests to get your license. If you require corrective lenses or a hearing aid to pass, a restriction will be added to your license, meaning you must always use them while driving.
Driver training
After passing the permit or written test and receiving your provisional instruction permit, drivers under 18 must meet these requirements to get their driver’s license:
- Hold your learner’s license for at least one year or reach 18 years of age, whichever comes first, without any traffic convictions.
- A parent, legal guardian, or adult over 21 years old must complete the Certificate of Minor Driving Experience Form, certifying that the driver has 50 hours of driving experience, 10 of which must be at night.
Preparing for the driving test
Just like other important tests, preparation is key. Before taking your driving test, practice driving around your neighborhood and on highways if you feel comfortable. The more you practice in various conditions, such as rain or heavy traffic, the more confident you’ll feel behind the wheel.
For the driving test, you’ll need your own vehicle, current registration, and proof of insurance. The car must also pass a basic vehicle inspection conducted by the driver’s license examiner. Make sure to schedule an appointment with the DMV beforehand.
Receiving your driver’s license
Once you’ve submitted all necessary paperwork and passed the required tests, you’ll finally receive your driver’s license. Here are a few tips for what to do next:
- Double-check for accuracy: You may receive a temporary paper driver’s license while your new card arrives in the mail. Before leaving the office, double-check that all printed information on your temporary license is correct.
- Follow restrictions: If you’re under 18, be sure to adhere to any license restrictions.
- Drivers 16 years of age: Driving is permitted between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., unless driving to or from work or accompanied by a licensed driver aged 21 or older.
- Drivers 17 years of age: Driving is permitted between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m., unless driving to or from work or accompanied by a licensed driver aged 21 or older.
- Practice safe driving: Now that you have your license, remember the important information you studied during your tests. Always follow traffic laws and drive defensively.
- Keep your license updated: Make sure to renew your license as required and update your address when you move.
