What kind of coverage is there for motorcycles

The type of coverage you need depends on a variety of factors. Your state might require you to carry specific insurance coverage. Ask your agent to help you determine what those requirements are.

Liability coverage

A requirement by almost every state. Before you are allowed to register your motorcycle and receive a license plate, you must be covered by liability insurance. The minimum coverage will vary by state, so it is important to understand what your individual state requires. Liability coverage can be separated into two primary types. Both help cover damage caused to another person, or their property, by an accident that you were deemed at fault for. Generally, liability coverage does not cover any damage caused to you or your property. The two primary types:

  • Bodily injury: helps pay for any medical care that a person receives as a result of an accident you are found at fault for. This can include ambulance rides, surgery costs, follow up appointments, and physical therapy.
  • Property damage: helps pay for repairs due to an accident that you are liable for. This can include not only another vehicle, but also damage to things like fences, light posts, or guard rails.

Comprehensive coverage

If your motorcycle sustains damages as a result of non-collision events such as vandalism, comprehensive coverage will help pay for costs associated with that repair., You might be required to pay a deductible before your insurance kicks in.

Collision coverage

Similar to Medical payments, collision coverage helps cover repair costs regardless of liability in an accident. There may be deductibles associated with this type of coverage.
