Who says science can’t be sweet? Infinity Insurance Agency, Inc (IIA) was thrilled to champion the spirit of STEM with their delightfully delicious contribution to Design Science High School in Fresno, CA. An edible DNA lab may sound like a mashup between Willy Wonka and a mad scientist, but this creative exploration of biology allowed one ninth-grade class to gain a hands-on perspective on the building blocks of life.
IIA has a long-standing history of giving back to the Hispanic community. The Design High School serves a diverse student body with 62% of students being of Hispanic descent, making it a perfect partner for IIA’s community outreach. In early 2024 the Design High School received a donation for the creation of the Edible DNA Lab project. This yummy science-based project was the brainchild of celebrated educator, Ms. Rodriguez.
This initiative was created to allow students to participate in a hands-on biology project that would highlight the physical structure of DNA. Through this thoughtful donation, students of Ms. Rodriguez built 3-D DNA models using edible materials such as Twizzlers, Red Vines, and Gummy Bears. Interactive science projects like the Edible DNA Lab allow students to go beyond the textbook and appreciate the intricacies of the building blocks of life. Tactile learning encourages critical thinking and promotes scientific curiosity. Since DNA is the basis for all life, understanding the helix’s intricate ladder of genetic information provides students with a foundational understanding of molecular biology. After the models are complete students can sample their creations with a sneaky taste!
We hope that through the thrill of scientific discovery many of these students, who also attend college courses through the dual enrollment programs, will be encouraged to pursue careers in STEM. With donations to this sponsorship, we have the chance to make a meaningful impact in the lives of Design High School students. Many of these students are navigating both high school and college courses as young freshmen. Contributions such as the Edible DNA Lab support interactive exploration and will hopefully spark a lifelong love affair with higher education.
